A Day in the Bay

Story by: Team Destination Cape Breton

Glace Bay is a town rich in culture, history and, oddly enough, wildlife. If you’re a history buff, wildlife watcher or want to spend an evening out for dinner and a show then you need to spend a day in the Bay.

Glace Bay 1

Big Glace Bay Beach

Start your Day in the Bay with a walk along Big Glace Bay Beach, home to the Big Glace Bay Lake National Wildlife Area. The beach is the perfect spot for an early morning stroll on the sandy shores where you can breathe in the salty air and watch the migratory birds run along the surf. If you’re a birder, be sure to bring your binoculars or spotting scope. Dozens of different birds use this area along their migration and the beach is home to the endangered Piping Plover.

Dig Deep into Local History

The Cape Breton Miners Museum pays tribute to Cape Breton Island’s long and rich history of coal mining. It is home to stories, artifacts and information about the resource that helped build Canada… coal. The Museum is also home to the famous choir of miners – The Men of the Deeps. When you visit the Museum you can join a retired mine guide for an underground mine tour, browse the modern exhibits and stroll through the historic village. Glace Bay is also home to another piece of iconic Canadian history, it’s the location where Guglielmo Marconi would change the world forever with the first official transatlantic exchange of radio messages.

The Brixton

Nothing says a ‘night on the town’ more than dinner and a show and Glace Bay has something special for you. Glace Bay’s new restaurant, The Brixton, will keep you coming back time and time again. The restaurant’s seasonal menus are sure to delight and surprise you. If you’re a charcuterie lover then go no further, every Wednesday night they feature a charcuterie board with a bottle of wine.
