Exploring Cape Breton Island with Ren Navarro

Story by: Team Destination Cape Breton

In June, Cape Breton Island welcomed Ren Navarro, a well-known advocate for diversity in the brewing industry and a passionate explorer. Ren’s visit to our stunning Island was a blend of historical adventures, local brews and breathtaking natural beauty. Here’s a look at her four-day itinerary.

“Definitely had a fantastic time touring an Island I thought I knew! Boy was I wrong! From having amazing ciders at Island Folk Cider, the absolutely breathtaking drives to arrive at fantastic breweries like Big Spruce and Breton Brewing were great bonuses.”

Day 1: History and Hospitality

The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site

Ren traveled to the historic Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. This 18th-century fortification is a living museum, offering a glimpse into life during the French colonial period. Ren had the exhilarating opportunity to fire a musket and meet the goats, experiencing firsthand the thrill and history of this remarkable site. She shared her excitement:

“Massive thanks to Ian at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site for not only teaching me how to hold an old-timey musket but how to SHOOT one! I love being able to interact with history and that was a dream come true.”

While at the Fortress, Ren sampled the rum from Authentic Seacoast at the La Taverne Storehouse. Authentic Seacoast ages their rum at the historic site and offers a variety of flavours like dark, amber and white rum. Ren was also treated to a temporary display called Louisbrick while visiting the Fortress. Louisbrick is a Lego recreation of the historic site and really deserves to be seen by both kids and adults!

Dinner & Stay at The North Star

The day concluded with a delightful dinner at The Bothy, the restaurant located at the North Star hotel in Louisbourg. Ren enjoyed a fantastic meal in a cozy setting, perfect for reflecting on her day’s adventures. She shared:

“My stay at North Star, owned by TV’s Colin and Justin, was cozy and just what I needed after a day at the Fortress. Great meals, drinks and laughs at the Bothy, plus a room with a beauty of a waterfront view. Breakfast was hearty and filling, ensuring I had more than enough energy (and coffee) to face another fun-filled day of touring around!”

Day 2: Coastal Explorations and Craft Brews

Day two began with Ren exploring the serene and picturesque Gooseberry Cove, taking in the stunning coastal views and enjoying a peaceful morning by the sea. Then it was off to Sydney for the day! She reflected:

“Climbing the windy hills at Gooseberry Cove, only to come upon the most gorgeous views, was a wonderful sensory experience.”

Island Folk Cider House Next, Ren sampled cider at Island Folk Cider House in Sydney. The cidery embraces tradition while pushing boundaries to create delicious and innovative ciders. Island Folk is known for its humble yet spirited approach, reflecting the bold and playful spirit of Cape Breton’s Island culture. As a locally owned craft cidery, they take pride in celebrating the rich and radical culture thriving on Cape Breton Island, inviting visitors to join in the celebration of their roots and community spirit. Ren highlighted her favourites:

“Sign me up for their Rebel Rosé and the Berry Citrus Mocktail!”

Breton Brewing Co. Ren’s craft beer journey continued with a tour at Breton Brewing, where she learned how they are using biochemistry to produce their beer and sampled a variety of innovative brews. The brewery’s passion for crafting exceptional beer was evident in every sip.

Dinner at Governor’s Pub & Eatery Dinner was at Governor’s Pub & Eatery where Ren savoured delicious local dishes in a welcoming atmosphere.

Day 3: Nature and Nautical Delights

Uisge Ban Falls Provincial Park Ren started her day with a drive to Baddeck then hiked to Uisge Ban Falls, a beautiful waterfall tucked away in the highlands of Cape Breton. The scenic trail and stunning waterfall offered a refreshing escape into nature.

Amoeba Tours on the WinStar Ren escaped the hot afternoon heat aboard the Amoeba Tours on the WinStar. The tour provided a relaxing and scenic cruise. Ren enjoyed a breeze while learning about Baddeck’s rich maritime history and its significance to the Bell family from knowledgeable guides. She even spotted a few eagles and their lakeside nests

Big Spruce Brewing After her boating excursion, Ren visited Big Spruce Brewing, known for its organic and sustainable brewing practices. Here, she enjoyed a variety of craft beers that highlighted the creativity and dedication of Cape Breton’s brewing community. She noted:

“Seeing the farm at Big Spruce and being able to walk amongst the hops while overlooking the beautiful waters is a surreal and wonderful experience. Not to mention doing all that while walking around with a tasty, certified organic beer! I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention going BACK to Big Spruce later in the week to have a smash burger that I’m still dreaming of, courtesy of Rose’s Smash Burgers! Perfection!”

Baddeck Lobster Suppers The day concluded with a classic maritime experience at Baddeck Lobster Suppers. Ren indulged in a feast of fresh lobster, savouring the flavours of the sea in a picturesque setting.

Day 4: Beaches and Distilleries

Breakfast at the Dancing Goat Café & Bakery Ren’s final day started with breakfast at the Dancing Goat Cafe & Bakery. The cafe’s warm ambience and delectable treats made it a memorable stop on her journey.

Inverness Beach After breakfast, Ren explored Inverness Beach. The pristine sands and crystal-clear waters provided a serene setting for reflection and relaxation, perfectly capturing the tranquility of Cape Breton’s coastal beauty.

Glenora Inn & Distillery Ren’s adventure concluded with a tour and tasting at Glenora Inn & Distillery, Canada’s first single malt whisky distillery. Here, she learned about the art of whisky-making and sampled some of the spirits. The distillery’s commitment to tradition and quality left a lasting impression, rounding off her visit on a high note.

Ren Navarro’s visit to Cape Breton Island was a celebration of history, community and natural beauty. Her journey showcased some of the best of what our Island has to offer, inspiring future travelers to embark on their own Cape Breton Island adventure.
