Mi’kmaq Interpretive Centre – The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site

During Louisbourg’s French occupation, the Mi’kmaq played a vital role, supporting the French community through knowledge sharing and supporting the French military during two sieges. The French in North America actively sought to cultivate friendships and alliances with Mi’kmaw people as an essential part of their defence strategy. Each year, the alliance between the two peoples was renewed in a formal ceremony where Mi’kmaw chiefs and French officials exchanged gifts and assurances of mutual trust and loyalty. This is a relationship that remains strong today. The Mi’kmaw Interpretive Centre at the Fortress of Louisbourg is a special place to talk about Mi’kmaw history through images, artifacts, songs, traditional drumming and storytelling.
